Birds survey in Newtimber/Poynings Area

For four years, the British Trust for Ornithology has been conducting survey work for an Atlas of British Birds. The Sussex Ornithological Society will be producing a county avifauna. Survey work began in November 2007 and will conclude in July 2011.

All the 2km squares in the county have been surveyed in both the winter (November-February) and the breeding season (April – July).

Newtimber is in the tetrad TQ21R. This stretches south down to Poynings and so contains a varied range of habitats and a good range of bird species. Fifty five species have been found using the tetrad during the winter; fifty four in the breeding season – for twenty of them, breeding has been confirmed. But there are some birds which are likely to be present which have not been reported, owls especially (Tawny and Little Owl are most likely). And breeding has not yet been proved for many of the summering birds.

The winter surveys have now been completed; but the months from April to July 2011 inclusive represent a chance to add to our knowledge of the breeding birds of the area. In the lists that follow, italics are used for species in which breeding has been proved.

If you find any other species, or if you find definite evidence of breeding (newly fledged young, occupied nest, adult carrying food), do please submit the record to the British Trust for Ornithology (http://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/birdatlas; the procedure is quite simple). More information about the Atlas and about Britain’s birds can be found there).

With thanks – and good birding...
